People have played games with boules since ancient times. There is archaeological evidence from over seventy centuries ago that some kind of Petanque game was played in Egypt. The modern game of Petanque, however, has it's origins in France. The story goes that in 1910 a new version of playing with boules was developed in the small French town of La Ciotat. A group of Jeu de Provencal players voted to change the rules to enable a handicapped player to participate. The new rule stipulated that all players must place both feet on the ground and not take a run-up when throwing the boule. Thus the new game of "pieds tanques" (feet together) was born. With its simple set of rules and easy maintenance of the playing terrain, the game of Petanque fast spread through France and Western Europe; and to all French colonies in Africa and the South Pacific. During the last 50 years, Petanque also found many followers in Asia, particularly Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Singapore and Japan.

In Japan, Petanque was probably introduced by members of the foreign community who played the game among themselves and with their Japanese friends. It was not until 1970 that Petanque was formally established with an official organization. Today there are several nationwide organized groups with a large base of licensed players who participate in many tournaments organized all over Japan.
