ペタンク。簡単で、おもしろい。しかし、時にはチェスと同じくらい複雑なゲーム 。

ヨーロッパで最も人気のある屋外レク活動の一つであるペタンクは、プレイヤーが「コショネ」と呼ばれる小さな木製の目標球に「ブール」と呼ばれる鉄球をできるだけ近づくように投球することを競うゲームのことである。ブールは直径が 7.05〜8センチ、重さは 650〜800グラムと公式に規定されている。２つのチームが対戦し、先に13点をとったチームが勝ちになる。

ペタンクは一般的に公園などの固めの砂・砂利の地面で行われる。投球方法は年齢に関係なく誰でも簡単に習得でき、ルールも単純なのだが、様々な投球テクニックを屈指できるレベルになればゲーム戦略もたくさんあるので、これを全部説明するのは至難の業ということになる。言い換えれば、誰でも参加できる単純なゲームだが、これまで完璧なゲームをした人はほとんどいないのである。

ペタンクには通常、上述の単純で簡単なゲームという言い方が当てはまるのだが、一方でペタンクは競技スポーツであるという解釈も当を得ている。競技ペタンクはレクリエーションペタンクと同じルールで行われるが、通常はコートラインとエンドラインで区画されたコートを使うので、正規のコートに即したルールが適用される。

Petanque. Easy and fun, but at times as complex as a game of chess

Petanque, one of Europe's most popular outdoor recreational activity, is a game where players try to throw balls made of iron called "boules" as close as possible to a small wooden target ball called "cochonnet". The "boules" measure officially between 7.05 and 8 centimeters and weigh 650 to 800 grams. Two teams play against each other and the team that reaches 13 points first wins.

Petanque is normally played on hard sand/gravel surface such as the ground of a park. The way of throwing a boule is easy to master for anyone, young or old, and the rules are simple too, but from a certain skill-level on the various throwing techniques and game strategies are so many that it is almost impossible to describe all of them. In short, it is a simple game where any person can compete, but hardly ever does a player succeed at being really perfect.

While the term Petanque usually refers to above described simple and easy-going game, it is also advisable to understand that Petanque is also played in a more competitive format. Just as with Recreational Petanque, the game of Competitive Petanque (Petanque sport) is based on the same rule set, but it usually also includes a marked court with end- and side-lines, therefore additional rules apply.
